Escritor estadounidense de novelas del oeste. Abandonó la escuela a los 15 años y viajó por el mundo antes de comenzar su carrera literaria en la década de 1940. Utilizó seudónimos, como Tex Burns y Jim Mayo hasta que su libro Hondo (1953) se transformó en una película éxito. Sus más de 100 novelas, en su mayoría western típicos que retratan de manera convincente la vida fronteriza han vendido 200 millones de ejemplares en 20 idiomas. Más de 30 novelas de su autoría fueron adaptadas al cine, entre ellas Kilkenny (1954), The Burning Hills (1956), Guns of the Timberland (1955) y La conquista del oeste (1963).
